"Jishin, Kaminari, Kaji, Oyaji" is an old Japanese saying to list the most scary things to the fourth runner up. Translated, it is "Earthquake, lightning, fire, father". This year, earthquake kept its number one spot, Tsunami replaced lightning on the second spot, and tyhoon replaced fire on the third. But Oyaji the father on the fourth spot has not been included in the game for some time now, and it looks like he is out of the game again this year. (Traditionally father was an absolute authoritative figure in Japanese household, but not so in the modern society.)

Japanese merchants have a funky tradition of “Happy Bags” (called “Fukubukuro”) in new years. They stuff their merchandise in bags and sell at much lower price than the total price of the contents. Customers grab a bag or two without knowing what are inside. Usually customers get good deals, but this is also a good way for merchants to get rid of their inventories.

For this Hawaii family, a merchant stuffed the bag full of fireworks that was just banned…

Judo champ, Ryoko Tani’s many slippers

When people have multiple responsibilities, old Japanese proverb called them to be wearing two pairs of slippers. Ryoko Tani, who is a gold medalist of Judo and just won the election to be a diet member, is also a wife and mother of two young children. When she won the election, she expressed her desire to stay in judo competition, but after a couple of month figured she had way too many slippers. So she dropped Judo.

Every year around the time when summer becomes fall, plovers (or koleas) fly to Hawaii from Alaska. The first sight of plover gives somewhat nostalgic feeling to the people in Hawaii, because we know that the summer is over, even though it is summer weather all year around.

On the other hand, Japan is having a historically hot summer, and it seems far from ending yet.

For the upcoming election to designate the leader of the Democratic Party in Japan, former Prime Minister Hatoyama tried to talk Kan and Ozawa into corroboration to form a “Troika (3 horse carriage)”. But overnight, negotiation failed, and both Kan and Ozawa decided to run for the post. For peace loving Hatoyama, this was a big disappointment… mostly because he lost his chance to be the third horse.
